Pre-Valentine Surprise
I surprised my wife with some sliced kiwi on ice, and she really liked it....I did another version later with Chinese pear, which sliced into a cored slice like a pineapple slice, which simulates ice without melting.
I custom cut the pieces and laid the kiwi into the cored section, which was made just large enough to fit the kiwi. I had to cut the core in an elliptical shape and kept just enough clearance to keep from mashing up the edges of the kiwi.
The Chinese pear was soaked earlier in lemon juice, which provides a nice counterpoint to the kiwi.
The crystal stemware was a wedding present....35 years ago....by the grace of God I have not broken it....:)
I didn't do this in front of my wife; it would have taken too long......:)
If you view the Flickr original size version full screen, the texture of the crystal really comes out, along with the unique texture of the kiwi and Chinese pear...

commented 3 months agoThanks, David...my father introduced the kiwi to fine dining back in the early 50's, and he would experiment with foods on me...the kiwi was served on ice, then called Chinese gooseberries. They were quite the novelty.
In a remarkable reprise, I introduced the kiwi to school kids, and they learned to like it....I did a booth at a Career Fair at a Junior High noted for the rough area it was in, and in exchange for a picture taken of them and anyone they chose, they try a sample of the kiwi and fill out an evaluation form. Amazingly junior high kids from warring factions behaved themselves standing in line to have their picture taken!
That success led to the introduction of a salad bar program that eventually resulted in winning the California School Boards Assn. Golden Bell Award!
Just one small 640x480 photo and a giant step for mankind!
